A beautiful spot for a comforting and delicious lunch in Newcastle — one which will leave you feeling full and taken care of. I went for Restaurant Week, meaning I was able to participate in their phenomenal deal of 2 courses for £15. What value for money! I highly recommend asking the staff what they suggest (as there were so many wonderful options on the menu I had trouble making an educated decision). I went with the spring rolls for a starter and the beef pho as my main. The spring rolls were probably the best I have ever eaten, with a delicious, savoury filling and a crisp though not oily exterior. Such a textural dream, and the sauce they serve alongside it is such a punchy complement. The beef pho came with a delicate, herby and refreshing broth with a hint of spice, as well as many beautiful ribbons of noodles, lots of thinly sliced beef and other delectable add-ins. A small plate with some lime, extra herbs and bean sprouts is served alongside it (make generous use of these!), and there are many condiments at the table if you’d like to spice up your broth. I highly recommend indulging in the original, wholesome flavour of the pho as it is prepared though. Extremely generous portions too! You will leave either full for the day, or with some soup still in your bowl! The staff were incredibly kind, polite and considerate, and service was super fast. I received a complementary glass of water free of charge when I didn’t order a drink, and was handed a little peppermint sweet after taking care of the bill. With smiles, a warm attitude and a genuinely passionate commitment to introducing the North East to heartwarming, authentic Vietnamese food — I’d recommend Tonkin to anyone!

WOW! WOW! WOW! What a fantastic place offering authentic and fresh Vietnamese food. The staff are wonderful and friendly! The ambience and vibe of the place almost transports you to Vietnam. The drip coffee is a MUST try!! Prices of dishes are really reasonable and portions filling. We really enjoyed our visit and we are excited to return again very soon! Cảm ơn for a wonderful meal🫶🏽🇻🇳

What an amazing place! A homely warming atmosphere, as soon as you walk in the smells of pho and coffee hit you. With extra seating upstairs, their pho portions were generous and absolutely delicious with plenty of condiments for your choosing. Our server was a lovely soft spoken woman who never stopped working and made sure to take her time explaining the Viet drip coffee to us even when she was rushing around. Absolutely recommend for anybody wanting a hot bowl of comforting soup, with generous vegan options.

Just had wonderful meal this afternoon. Food so fresh and tasty, excellent choice, very authentic and staff so pleasant and helpful. The fact that even the juices were freshly squeezed just added to the experience. We had starters of crispy spring rolls, summer garden rolls and tempura prawns all of which were delicious. Mains Hue Hot and spicy and a beef pho bowl and the special pho bowl all having a wonderful flavour, really fresh ingredients the hue being somewhat spicier than the pho. There were condiment jars with delicious pickled garlic and chillies and additional bowl of fresh herbs and bean sprouts - portions are very generous.2 Hanoi beers and a fresh orange and we were very satisfied customers £75 - excellent value. The decor is welcoming as we’re all the staff - a really memorable meal and will definitely be back.

Lovely little quirky place for some delicious pho! Very reasonable priced and a really good portion size on the Special Pho I had which came with 3 different proteins beef, chicken and prawns. The garden summer rolls with peanut dip were spot on! Highly recommend to try this Vietnamese restaurant.
