Had the set lunch here (went for the $75pp) and we were very, very spoiled. Chef Thanh and his wife crafted a beautiful menu that gets better with every plate served. We started on a high when Chef Thanh kindly gifted us complementary oysters as we were here for a birthday occasion. Oysters were velvety and the accompanying sauce was tangy and just delicious. We then had the beef carpaccio, seared scallop and coconut turmeric pancakes with side Vietnamese salad. These hit the spot with all the right flavour harmony and left us wanting more as we waited for our mains. The duck for mains had a crispy skin and sits in a nice “herbal soup”, something we’ve never had before. The chef explains that it’s a dish that pays homage to the Malaysian bak kut teh, an herbal pork broth dish synonymous to the Malaysian Chinese community. It was lightly sweet, savoury, and offered a flavour depth we don’t always find in Melbourne. We also ordered the grilled flathead with what we assumed was a Thai inspired lightly spiced citrus sauce. This dish will take you to Southeast Asia for all the good reasons. The only way this dish can be improved is if a meatier, less bony fish is used so we can inhale every morsel without fearing an unpleasant piercing episode mid-meal. Food aside, Chef Thanh really made us feel at home with his charismatic appeal, gastronomy and travel stories for days, and knowledge on the food business. The superstar is none other than Chef Thanh’s wife, who worked hard in the kitchen to serve us the best birthday meal we’ve had so far. Rue de Thanh took us on an elevated dining experience through Vietnam, Thailand, and perhaps a little bit of Malaysia. Overall, we’ll be back soon to try more dishes and the desserts we didn’t get to try. Thanks so much chefs!

As soon as I stepped into this restaurant, spotting the real little trees and plants 🌿 by the windows, I knew I'd come to the right place. We ordered three dishes, and each one was absolutely stunning. First off, the ingredients were incredibly fresh, with just the right seasoning to preserve their natural flavors. The eggplant and cauliflower were cooked to perfection—juicy yet not greasy at all. The toppings were a delightful surprise to the taste buds, enhancing the dishes beautifully without stealing the spotlight from the mains; the pairings were spot on. Finally, the meticulously prepared duck had a familiar Chinese-inspired touch, with a lightly crispy skin that added great texture while toning down the usual intensity of duck meat, giving it a more gentle and refined vibe. Overall, this sums up my impression of this Vietnamese fine dining spot: it's humble, kind, and grounded, with profound culinary skill that's understated—a true hidden gem of a restaurant. Highly recommended!

Wonderful end of year celebration at this gem of a restaurant. The owner couldn’t be more hospitable and the food was delicious - wonderful flavours- the combination of the fresh Vietnamese style food with the classic French twist makes it well worth a visit.

Came here for my birthday dinner and we had a feast!! Every single dish was superb! You can tell every dish is very thoughtful by the balance and flavor. The beef carpaccio was definitely a standout dish for us, but I’m not exaggerating when I say that every dish was spectacular. We left full and satisfied. Thanks for an amazing birthday meal!

What a gem of a place! The food was exquisite- all cooked by Thanh’s wife. The menu was beautifully crafted and the attention to detail made all the difference. We elected to have the “Feed Me” selection and it was a superb selection of small plates and generous mains. Our host Thanh was a generous host - welcoming, knowledgeable and attentive. At the end of the evening we felt as if we had been invited into his home for a very special dinner. I highly recommend- we hope to head back soon for the “Street Eats”
