Not great. The char kway teow was not adequately caramelised, too soggy. Prawns were also only partially cooked. Coffee was weak. I thought the place was over hyped 2 years ago. This visit confirmed my initial impression.
If you're craving Malaysian food in Melbourne, there's a place you must visit. Situated in a bustling area, the restaurant is renowned for its Char Kway Teow, which is a favorite among locals and tourists. Despite being very busy during lunchtime, we were fortunate not to have a long wait. Inside is pretty pack with not much room to maneuver. It is like a coffee shop/restaurant in asia. The menu offers a variety of items, but we opted for the Char Kway Teow with blood clams and extra pork lard. They charge a small fee, around a dollar or more, for the additional pork lard. We also tried the laksa mee and fish crackers. The Char Kway Teow was truly outstanding. The 'wok hei' aroma was delightful, and the duck egg Char Kway Teow was delicious. The bits of fried lard and Chinese sausage added a wonderful texture and richness, with the blood clams being the star ingredient. While the laksa and fish crackers were decent, they didn't stand out as much. I had planned to visit the restaurant again, but I decided to try another Malaysian Char Kway Teow place instead, which unfortunately left me disappointed.
Came down on a Thursday for lunch during business hours, was recommended to me and this place is good that it has two store fronts in the middle of Hardware Lane. Ordered the staple Char Koay Teow (CKT) and the Duck egg CKT, there were some confusion with where we seated and the food took a while and a reminder for it to come out. When it came out, both the duck egg and the vanilla CKT looked the same, makes me wonder if thereโs any duck egg in it but Iโll let you decide from the pictures. Overall the food is decent enough to feel authentic, lacked a bit of the wok hei and the prawn was large and plenty. Will try another dish next time but to at this price point, the value felt a little shy about introducing itself.
If your looking for home style cooking, this is the place to go. This is thier winter warmer confetti duck. Amazing, it's simply looking but has layer's of flavour. Update 27/11/25 I had the chicken and potato curry puff. It was flaky and crispy and the curry had a slight sweetness to it. Well balanced curry and good ratios from Chicken to potato. I ordered the classic curry laksa with duck plood slices. The broth had good depth of flavour and the sambal had a nice kick to it.
Lovely catch up with my girlfriend in Melbourne at our fave restaurant, Lulu, tucked away in a quaint little lane. We tried their prawn toasts for the first time and were blown away by how delicious they were, all toasted and juicy, thick and loaded with prawns. My personal fave is the Razor Clams Char Kway Teow, which is basically a party in your mouth with wok-fried noodles, razor clams, prawns, Chinese sausages, eggbean sprouts, crispy pork lards, chives, and chilli. This place serves up one of the best Char Kway Teow dishes in Melbourne, and in my humble opinion, it's even better than the ones in Sydney, which is probably why it's got such an ridiculously high rating.
